Gus Dur Died


Former President Abdurrahman Wahid or popularly also known as Gus Dur died during medication after suffering from complications caused by heart disease, kidney disorders and diabetes for years, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital director Akmal Taher said.

Indonesia`s fourth president died at the age of 69 at 18.40 west Indonesia time (WIB).

"The country has lost a prominent figure whose ideas always enlightened the people," Indonesian Moslem Students Movement secretary general Zaini Shofari said.

Gus Dur was born in Denanyar village, Jombang district, East Java, on August 4, 1940. He is survived by his wife, Sinta Nuriyah, and four daughters, namely Alissa Qotrunnada Munawaroh, Zannuba Arifah Chafsoh, Annita Hayatunnufus, and Inayah Wulandari.

He served as the country`s fourth president from October 20, 1999 to August 24, 2001.
